.What do many successful real estate investors have in common? For one thing, they usually see future value where others do not, and as a result, often have the opportunity to purchase properties at rock bottom cost before the prices go up. In other words, people that are wise investors are usually value investors, and end up owning real estate at a time when the obvious to them, has not yet become obvious to everyone else. This brings us to discuss the Barahona area of the Dominican Republic, which is still one of the most beautiful ocean front areas directly on the Caribbean Sea. As well, it also one of the places still offering property buyers the chance to own a home or ocean view property at half or considerably less than half the costs of some other parts of the country. Why? Because it remains one of the best kept secrets of the Caribbean - - for the moment. . Speaking of which, let us back up for just one moment and try to figure out what happened to other areas such as Samana, Punta Cana, etc. Ten years ago, Samana was the ocean front real estate bargain paradise in the Dominican Republic. Not anymore. It became discovered, and with the new international airport built in Nagua, prices went through the roof. Which is to say, the only way for tourists to arrive in Semana was to fly into Puerto Plata and take a 3 hour car ride in order to get there. With the new airport, the travel time from airport location to properties was reduced to 40 minutes. . Next of course we have Punta Cana. About fifteen years ago, Punta Cana was an uninhabited no man's land, with miles of beautiful ocean front real estate and nothing but some coconut trees and passing birds to enjoy the view. Now of course is another matter. Building lots and ocean view villas are selling for million dollar price tags. Even Donald Trump has jumped into the fray with an upscale and costly high end residential development as well. But, I hark back to the days when there was nothing, when a brave European resort chain called Club Med took a chance to build the very first tourist resort. Arriving guests had to fly into Las Americas Airport in Santo Domingo and had to be taken on a 3 hour van ride passed small, sleepy towns and miles of sugar cane fields in order to arrive at the resort. Of course, now it is another story altogether. Punta Cana has their own modern international airport, and more than 30 tourist resorts dotting the beaches up and down the coastline. Lately, the new change has been the various residential projects going up, to cater to those people that either want to relocate permanently, or in the least have their very own place in the sun for part-time use. . In any event, the point is, what do you see as some commonalities with these places prior to becoming discovered? An open and virgin area with beautiful beach front and ocean view property, an airport 3 hours away by car, an area yet to be pushed in the mainstream by promotors and as a result, the bargain real estate opportunites the wise investor is looking for. However, speaking of the airport issue, there already is an international airport in Barahona ready to go. The government had it build a few years back in anticipation of interest and growth, but it has fallen victim to the chicken - egg phenomenon. You know what we mean: Which comes first, the chicken or the egg? Major international airlines were waiting for large hotel chains to move in before scheduling flights. Large resort and hotel chains were waiting for the flights to start coming in before engaging in any projects. However, rumor has it that flights into the area are slated to begin in 2009, but of course rumors are just that, sometimes wishful thinking, sometimes fact but not exactly or always as conveyed. However, the airport will be busy in the future, we have no doubt about it. It may be in 2009, it may be in five years, or it many be in ten years. The point is, now is the time to invest in the area before that happens, as once the 3 hour car ride is eliminated and a modern local airport is in business, the bargain real estate prices will become a thing of the past. .
